The other reason this sound file is being sent out today (August 15) is because today is Susan Piggott's birthday. The score is published by Musica Russica (The soloist is Susan Piggott. This is from "God With Us: Chant for Christmas and Carols from Poland and Ukraine," published by World Library Publications, Franklin Park, IL in 1998. While Chesnokov is most certainly a Russian composer, the Schola made this recording in a Ukrainian Catholic Church, and so used Ukrainian pronunciation of the Slavonic. When it is sung, it has a non-scriptural refrain ("More honorable than the cherubim, and beyond comparison more glorious than the seraphim.) This setting is in Church Slavonic. In Byzantine liturgical practice, the Song of Mary is sung at Matins (not at Vespers as in the West). It is "Velichit Dusha Moya Hospoda," by Pavel Chesnokov. This sound track in the series is more of a "konzert" than an actual liturgical piece, even though it does follow Eastern Orthodox structure.
